The golden thread isn’t just about keeping documents
The golden thread is one of the most important concepts introduced by the Building Safety Act.
It is also one of the most misunderstood.
Many people think the golden thread is simply about collecting and storing building information. In reality, the challenge is much greater. The real test is whether that information can be trusted, kept up to date, found when needed, and passed on properly when responsibility changes.
That sounds straightforward, but in practice it is one of the biggest challenges facing those responsible for higher-risk buildings.
Every inspection, repair, replacement, alteration and safety occurrence changes the picture. If the information doesn’t keep up, the golden thread quickly becomes a record of what the building used to be, rather than what it is today.
Our latest white paper, produced by Dr Shaun Lundy, explores what the golden thread actually requires, why information management sits at the heart of compliance, and what duty holders should be doing in practice.
